Planning a trip in the Abel Tasman? Know which side of the park!
Beau Vista Pohara is on the Golden Bay side of Abel Tasman National Park. Many popular cruises depart from Kaiteriteri or Marahau, which means driving back over Tākaka Hill. Allow around 1.5 hours each way from Pohara, more in poor weather or darkness. For a relaxed day from Beau Vista, look for Golden Bay/Tōtaranui-side Abel Tasman options, or plan Kaiteriteri/Marahau cruises for the day before or after your Golden Bay stay.
Are there options on the Golden Bay side of the Abel Tasman?
Yes, there are! You can also hire kayaks from Golden Bay Kayaks at Tata Beach and explore the stunning beauty of the Northern side of the Abel Tasman National Park. There are also Golden Bay-side water taxi options too. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles has a “From Golden Bay” cruise departing from Tōtaranui, and AquaTaxi also lists Tōtaranui-based day-out/water-taxi options.
Is Beau Vista Pohara a stand-alone holiday house?
Beau Vista is a self-contained guest apartment adjoining the owners’ home. It has its own private entrance, parking area, outdoor space and facilities, so you can enjoy an independent stay while knowing we are nearby if you need local help.
Do we need a car in Golden Bay?
Yes, we strongly recommend having a car. Golden Bay is a beautiful rural area and many beaches, walks, cafés and attractions are spread out. Public transport is limited, and some of the best places are easiest to reach by car.
What should we know about driving over Tākaka Hill?
Tākaka Hill is the main road into Golden Bay. It is scenic, but it is also steep, winding and slower than many visitors expect. We recommend allowing extra time, especially in poor weather, at night, or if you are not used to New Zealand hill roads.
What is a good first-day plan after arriving in Pohara?
It depends how early you arrive, how much energy you have for starting your explorations, and what time the sunset is. Many guests are happiest keeping their arrival day simple: settle in, walk on Pohara Beach, enjoy the view, and have an easy meal. If you have just driven over Tākaka Hill, it is usually better not to plan a tightly timed activity on the other side of the hill the same day. If you like we can help you decide the perfect itinerary to meet your energy level, interests, tide times and the weather.
How many nights should we stay in Golden Bay?
You can enjoy a short stay, but Golden Bay rewards slowing down. Two nights gives you a taste. Three or four nights gives you much more time for beaches, walks, local cafés, Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach, Wainui Bay, Tākaka, and the Golden Bay side of Abel Tasman.
Where can we buy groceries and supplies?
Tākaka is the main service town for groceries, fuel, cafés, pharmacy items and other essentials. Our local supermarket is FreshChoice in Tākaka. It closes at 8:00PM in peak summer season and 7:00PM in the low season. Pohara also has local food and dining options nearby, as well as a camp store where you can get some groceries and take away food. If you are arriving late, it is worth picking up supplies before you settle in.
Can we self-cater at Beau Vista?
Yes, Beau Vista is set up for self-catering, with kitchen facilities suitable for preparing simple meals. Many guests like to combine easy meals at home with local cafés, restaurants and fresh Golden Bay produce.
What can we do if the weather is wet?
Golden Bay is still beautiful in changing weather. Good wet-weather options include cafés, galleries, local shops, short beach walks between showers, scenic drives, the cinema or museum in Tākaka, and simply relaxing at Beau Vista with the view.
Can we visit Farewell Spit and Wharariki Beach from Beau Vista?
Yes, Farewell Spit, Wharariki Beach and the western end of Golden Bay are popular day trips from Pohara. Allow plenty of time, check weather and tide conditions, and book Farewell Spit tours ahead if you want to go beyond the public access areas.
Is Beau Vista suitable for guests with limited mobility?
Please contact us before booking if you have mobility concerns. We can describe the parking, entrance, access path and bathroom layout so you can decide whether Beau Vista will suit your needs.
Is there WiFi and mobile coverage?
Ultra fast (fibre) WiFi and excellent mobile coverage is available at Beau Vista to guests for free. In other areas mobile coverage can vary around Golden Bay, especially in more remote beaches, valleys and national park areas, so it is a good idea to download maps or booking details before heading out for the day.
Are there good walks nearby?
Yes. There is a huge selection of walks for all levels of fitness in Golden Bay and we can recommend several of them when you arrive. Pohara Beach of course is close by for easy walks, and there are many coastal, bush and national park walks within driving distance. Let us know your fitness level and interests and we can suggest options, from gentle beach strolls to longer day walks.
What is the best way to plan Abel Tasman activities from Beau Vista?
Check the departure point carefully. If you are booking a cruise, check whether it departs from Kaiteriteri/Marahau or Tōtaranui/Golden Bay. From Beau Vista Pohara, make sure you select Golden Bay/Tōtaranui-side Abel Tasman options. If you do chose Kaiteriteri or Marahau departures know that they are on the other side of Tākaka Hill and will need much more driving time – up 1.5 hours each way.
Can we book direct?
Yes! We always welcome direct bookings with guests. Please check the availability calendar on Holiday Houses here and contact us with your dates. We accept direct credits or payments to our NZ, Wise or PayPal accounts.
